Battery Storage Without Solar Panels: Does It Stack Up?

A home battery without solar panels earns its keep one way: buying electricity cheap overnight on a two-rate tariff and using it through the day instead of paying the standard rate. That arbitrage is real, roughly halving the unit cost of every stored kilowatt-hour on typical tariff gaps, and for high-usage households it adds up. But the same battery paired with solar earns twice, storing free generation in summer and cheap overnight units in winter, which is why battery-only is the right answer for some homes and the runner-up for most.

The short answer

A home battery without solar panels earns its keep one way: buying electricity cheap overnight on a two-rate tariff and using it through the day instead of paying the standard rate. That arbitrage is real, roughly halving the unit cost of every stored kilowatt-hour on typical tariff gaps, and for high-usage households it adds up. But the same battery paired with solar earns twice, storing free generation in summer and cheap overnight units in winter, which is why battery-only is the right answer for some homes and the runner-up for most.

How a battery earns without solar

Strip solar out of the picture and a battery has exactly one income stream: the gap between cheap and expensive electricity. Two-rate tariffs sell overnight units at a fraction of the daytime price, commonly less than half, because the grid has spare capacity while the country sleeps. A battery charges through that window, then powers the house through the day, so every kilowatt-hour you use costs the overnight rate instead of the standard one. Our time-shifting guide covers the mechanics in depth, because the same trick is half the value of a battery even when solar is present.

Some tariffs add a second, smaller stream: discharging to the grid during premium evening windows, the pattern tariffs like Octopus Flux reward. Without solar the volumes are modest, whatever charge is spare after the house is fed, but it sweetens the arithmetic.

The honest maths

Take a household using 12kWh a day between morning and bedtime, a normal figure for a family home. Shift all of it from a standard rate to an overnight rate at roughly half the price and the saving is the difference on 12kWh, every day. Across a year that is a four-figure quantity of kilowatt-hours bought at the cheap rate instead of the dear one.

The honest caveats: batteries lose a little energy in the round trip, tariff gaps move over time, and the saving scales with how much you actually use during the day. A big battery in a low-usage home has nothing to shift. That is why we size from your actual consumption at survey rather than quoting a universal payback figure, and why battery-only installs are priced at survey, where the right answer might be a smaller unit than you expected.

Who battery-only genuinely suits

  • High daytime users with no viable roofNorth-facing flats aside, some roofs genuinely cannot host panels: heavy shade, no ownership of the roof, listed-building refusals. If the usage is there, the time-shifting case stands on its own.
  • EV and heat pump householdsBig electric loads mean big volumes to shift, and the overnight tariffs these households already use are exactly the ones a battery exploits.
  • Power-cut coverWith the right setup, a battery can keep essentials running through an outage, a benefit that has nothing to do with tariffs; our power-cut guide explains what is and is not possible.
  • Solar-later plannersA battery fitted on a hybrid inverter now is solar-ready later, so battery-first can be a staged route rather than a final answer.

What adding solar changes

Here is the comparison that matters. A battery-only home buys every stored kilowatt-hour, cheaply, but buys it. A solar-and-battery home fills the same battery with free generation for much of the year and falls back to cheap overnight charging in winter. Same hardware, two income streams instead of one, plus export payments on the surplus. It is why our package pricing starts at £8,500 for panels and a 10kWh battery together: for most homes with a usable roof, the combined system is simply the better investment, and the price gap between battery-only and the full package is smaller than people expect once scaffolding and electrical work are on site anyway. If the roof works, price both before deciding.

Practicalities: install, rules, kit

  • Location rulesPAS 63100, the British Standard for home battery installation, steers where batteries go, favouring garages, utility spaces and suitable external walls over escape routes. A competent installer designs to it as standard.
  • Grid notificationBatteries register with your network operator like solar does, under the same G98 and G99 framework our grid guide covers. Your installer handles it.
  • The kit we fitFogstar batteries, 10kWh or 16.1kWh like the unit pictured, on inverters that manage charging schedules automatically once your tariff is set. Sized from your smart meter data, not guesswork.
  • A smart meter is essentialTwo-rate tariffs need half-hourly metering; without one, the whole model has nothing to price against. Our smart meter guide covers getting one.

Frequently asked questions

Can you have battery storage without solar panels?

Yes. A battery charges from the grid on a cheap overnight tariff and powers the house through the day, cutting the unit cost of the electricity you shift, often by roughly half on typical two-rate tariff gaps. It installs like any other battery system and needs no roof work at all.

Is a battery without solar worth it in the UK?

For high-usage households on a two-rate tariff, the arbitrage saving is real and repeats daily. For light users there is little to shift and the case weakens. And for any home with a workable roof, solar plus battery usually beats battery-only, because the same battery then earns from free generation as well as cheap charging.

How much does battery-only installation cost?

It depends on capacity, location and electrical work, so we price it at survey rather than quoting a misleading flat figure. As context, our full solar-and-battery packages start at £8,500 all-in, and the gap to battery-only is smaller than most people expect once installation is on site either way.

Can I add solar to a battery later?

Yes, and doing battery-first sensibly means fitting a hybrid inverter now so panels connect straight in later without replacing anything. Say so at survey and the design allows for it from day one.

Will a battery keep my house running in a power cut?

Only with a backup-capable setup specified from the start: standard grid-tied systems shut down in an outage for safety. With the right hardware, essential circuits can stay live. Tell your installer backup matters to you and the design follows.
