Frequently asked questions
Are solar panels worth it in the UK?
Yes—solar PV can cut electricity bills, reduce exposure to price rises and lower carbon emissions. Actual savings depend on your roof, usage and tariff. We provide a tailored proposal with predicted generation (kWh/yr), savings and payback for your property. See real outcomes in our case studies and read our homeowner overview: The Complete Homeowners Guide to Solar Panels.
How many solar panels will I need?
We size systems from your annual consumption (kWh), roof area and budget. As a guide, many homes fit 3–6 kWp (around 8–16 modern panels), but the “right” size depends on your usage and export tariff. For a deeper explanation, see our Ultimate Guide to Installing Solar PV or speak to our team via Contact Us.
How much electricity will my system generate?
Generation is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) and varies by system size, orientation, shading and location. We model your predicted annual yield using industry methodology and include it in your proposal. For panel choices and performance tips, see Choosing the Right Solar Panel.
Do solar panels work in winter or on cloudy days?
Yes. PV produces electricity from daylight, not heat. Output is lower in winter due to shorter days and sun angle, but cool temperatures actually help panel efficiency. Our proposals show monthly generation so you know what to expect year-round. Explore battery options to shift winter daytime generation into the evening: Solar Battery Solutions for Homes.
Is a solar battery worth it?
A battery increases self-consumption (using more of what you generate) and can reduce peak-time imports. Value depends on your usage pattern, tariff and battery size. We’ll model payback both with and without storage so you can decide. See home batteries or larger systems for businesses.
Can I use my solar panels to charge an EV?
Yes—pairing PV with a smart charger lets you prioritise surplus solar for charging. Typical UK home chargers are ~7 kW AC; workplaces may use 11–22 kW AC and rapid DC for fleets. Learn more: Smart EV Charging at Home and EcoCharge Stations.
Do I need planning permission?
Most domestic and commercial rooftop systems fall under permitted development. Exceptions include listed buildings, conservation areas or certain flat-roof/ground-mount designs. We advise at survey stage and can assist with any applications. Read more in our homeowners guide or ask us via Contact Us.
What if my roof isn’t suitable?
We look at alternative arrays such as ground-mount, carports or different roof elevations. For businesses, see design ideas in Solar Solutions for Modern Constructions and Solar for Smart Industry. For homes, see Solar for Modern Constructions.
How long does installation take, and will it be disruptive?
Most homes install within 1–2 days; commercial projects vary with size and access. We handle scaffolding, electrical works and DNO notifications, and we keep your site tidy. See how we deliver on complex builds in our case studies and Expert Solar Fitting.
What warranties and guarantees are included?
Typical packages include module performance warranties (often 25 years), product warranties on modules and inverters, and an installation workmanship guarantee. We specify exact terms in your quote. Learn how we choose components in Expert Solar Installation Services and Renewable Power for Companies.
How do I get started?
