What works without one
Let us dispose of the myth first: solar panels do not need a smart meter to function. The system generates, your appliances use solar first, the battery charges, all of it driven by the inverter and its own metering, none of it dependent on what your billing meter can do. A household that never fits a smart meter still gets the core benefit of solar, which is buying less electricity.
One legacy wrinkle worth knowing: some very old spinning-disc meters could run backwards when a home exported, which is why installers historically flagged meter checks. Modern digital meters do not do this, and if you still have a meter old enough to spin, it is due for replacement on age alone.
What only works with one

Getting one fitted
1. Ask your electricity supplier
Smart meters are fitted by your supplier at no charge under the national rollout. Most suppliers let you book online, and telling them you have solar helps them configure export metering correctly.
2. Time it around your install
Either order works: meter first or panels first. What matters for payments is that both exist before you apply for a SEG tariff, so if your install date is booked, request the meter now rather than after.
3. Sign up for export
With the smart meter live and your MCS certificate in hand, register for a SEG tariff, and not necessarily with your import supplier: you can export to whoever pays best. That single registration is the most commonly forgotten step in solar ownership.
The common worries, answered
- Will it misread my solar?No. The meter measures what crosses the boundary: imports one way, exports the other. Your self-consumed solar never touches it, which is the point.
- Do smart meters clash with inverters?The inverter pictured neither knows nor cares what billing meter you have. The two systems meter different things independently.
- Is the in-home display the meter?No, it is just a screen. Losing or unplugging it changes nothing about billing or export payments.
- Signal problems in my area?Coverage has improved substantially, and suppliers can advise on your specific address. Where a meter genuinely cannot communicate, it still measures; the export tariff conversation happens with the supplier.

Why do export payments need a smart meter?
Because the Smart Export Guarantee pays for measured exports in half hour periods, and only smart meters record flows at that resolution in both directions. The tariff cannot pay for what cannot be measured, which is the entire connection between the meter and the money.
Does a smart meter cost anything?
No. Suppliers fit them at no charge under the national rollout, and having solar often moves you up the queue since export metering is a clear need. Book it through your supplier and mention the solar so the meter is configured for export from day one.
Should the smart meter go in before or after the solar install?
Either order works; both must exist before SEG registration. If your install date is booked, request the meter in parallel rather than waiting, because supplier fitting lead times are the usual delay between panels generating and payments starting.
Can I refuse a smart meter and still have solar?
Yes, smart meters remain optional and the panels will work regardless. You will forgo export payments and the time-of-use tariffs that reward battery owners, which for most solar homes is real money left on the table every year. The choice is yours; the trade-off is that clear.
Do I need a special solar smart meter?
No. Standard second-generation smart meters measure both import and export. Your installer's paperwork plus the meter is the full technical requirement for a SEG tariff; the rest is a registration form with the supplier you choose to export to.
