The short answer

A solar panel and battery package for a UK home costs £8,500 to £11,800 all-in at our real installed prices, with the most popular combination, 5 to 6kWp of panels with a 16.1kWh battery, at £9,995. Those figures include scaffolding, electrical work and 0% VAT, with nothing to add. Here is what each package suits.

The packages and real prices

These are the prices we install at across the East Midlands, not scraped national averages with a margin of error the size of a battery:

PackageAll-in installed priceBest suited to
2.7kWp panels + 10kWh battery£8,500Terraces and smaller roofs, lighter usage
4kWp east west split + 10kWh battery£9,000Semis with east and west roof faces
5 to 6kWp + 16.1kWh battery£9,995Most 3 and 4 bed homes. Our most installed package by a distance
7kWp + 16.1kWh battery£11,800Larger detached homes, bigger usage, EV on the drive

Every figure is a single all-in price with the 0% VAT relief already reflected, which applies to domestic solar and battery packages until 31 March 2027. If you want the cost picture for panels alone, or per city, our UK cost guide and city guides carry those; this page is about the package most buyers actually choose.

Which package fits which home

The sizing logic runs on two questions: what can the roof hold, and how does the household use electricity?

  • £8,500 packageCompact roofs and modest bills. Six panels and 10kWh of storage still shift most of a small household's usage off peak rates.
  • £9,000 packageThe east west answer: a split array harvests morning and afternoon sun, paired with 10kWh of storage.
  • £9,995 packageThe best balance of roof space, generation and the 16.1kWh battery pictured, which covers a family evening and cheap-rate winter charging. Most of our installs are this.
  • £11,800 packageFor big roofs and big appetites: EVs, heat pumps on the horizon, home offices running all day.

What all-in actually includes

  • Tier 1 panels with 25-year performance warranties500W as standard, stepped to 450 or 475W where the roof uses them better.
  • Solis hybrid inverterOne unit managing panels and battery together.
  • Fogstar battery storage10kWh or 16.1kWh LFP, sized to the package.
  • Scaffolding, erected and struckThe line that surprises people on other quotes.
  • All electrical work and certificationIsolation, generation meter, consumer unit work agreed at survey, plus the MCS certificate (NIC200223) and DNO paperwork that unlock export payments.
  • 5-year workmanship guaranteeBacked by a QANW insurance-backed guarantee.

What moves the price

Two identical packages can land differently on two houses. The honest levers, all priced at survey rather than sprung later:

  • Roof complexityMultiple faces, dormers, velux windows and slate coverings add labour.
  • Scaffold accessConservatories, extensions and shared alleys can force extra lifts.
  • Consumer unit conditionOlder boards sometimes need upgrading before connection.
  • In-roof finishThe flush look adds tray cost over standard on-roof mounting.
  • Battery size choicesStepping up capacity for time-shifting headroom, per the sizing guide.

What the package earns back

The reason the package outsells panels-only is arithmetic, not upselling. At the Ofgem cap unit rate of 26.11p per kWh (July to September 2026 cap) and East Midlands generation of 900 to 1,050 kWh per kWp per year (MCS-standard methodology), the £9,995 package typically returns its cost in circa 8 years, combining self-used generation, export payments on surplus, and cheap-rate overnight charging through winter on a two-rate tariff. Illustrative, not guaranteed, and your usage moves it; the full working sits in our payback analysis and time-shifting guide, and the calculator takes your own numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How much do solar panels and a battery cost together in the UK?

At our real installed prices, £8,500 to £11,800 all-in depending on system and battery size, with the most popular package, 5 to 6kWp plus a 16.1kWh battery, at £9,995. Prices include scaffolding, all electrical work and 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

Is it cheaper to buy panels and battery together or separately?

Together, almost always: one scaffold hire, one electrical visit, one commissioning, and a hybrid inverter doing both jobs from day one. Phasing works when budget demands it, ideally with a hybrid inverter fitted first, but the combined install is the efficient route.

Why do package prices vary so much between installers?

Kit quality, what is genuinely included, and how the firm operates. Check whether scaffolding and electrical work are in the figure, whether the panels carry 25-year performance warranties, battery chemistry and size, and who actually does the installing. A cheap headline with extras bolted on usually lands dearer.

What size battery should be in my package?

Matched to your evening and overnight usage, then sanity-checked against winter time-shifting: a battery holding most of a day's demand keeps you on cheap rates through the months the roof contributes little. For typical families that lands on our 16.1kWh size; lighter users suit 10kWh.

Do package prices include VAT?

There is no VAT to include: domestic solar and battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027 under the energy saving materials relief, so our all-in figures are the complete price. After that date a 5% rate is scheduled to return, which is worth factoring into timing.

How long does a package install take?

Typically a day or two on site for a domestic package: scaffold up, panels and battery in, commissioning and handover. Domestic install lead time runs around 3 to 5 days from confirmed order, subject to scaffold scheduling, and the paperwork for export payments follows at handover.
