Solar Panel Installation Cost UK 2026
Typical UK domestic solar installation cost in 2026 ranges from £8,500 (2.7kWp + 10kWh battery, small terraced floor) through £9,995 (5–6kWp + 16.1kWh battery, the our most popular system) to ~£14,000+ (10kWp + 16–32kWh battery for larger homes), all-in including labour, scaffolding, mounting kit and 0% VAT. Commercial installs run £850–£1,100 per kWp ex-VAT depending on roof type and battery inclusion. Prices vary by installer scale, kit choice, roof complexity and DNO requirements — always compare on like-for-like specification.
Solar pricing has stabilised in 2026 after the post-2022 surge. Battery prices have continued to fall (Fogstar 16.1kWh dropped 30%+ since 2023), panel prices have flattened, and labour costs have nudged up slightly with general inflation. Net result: comparable systems cost about the same as they did 18 months ago, but you get more battery capacity at the same price point.

What’s in a typical quote
- Solar panels (JA Solar or Aiko, typically 500W, up to 540W on larger roofs)
- Inverter (Solis hybrid for residential, Solis HV three-phase for commercial)
- Battery (Fogstar for LV systems, Pylontech for HV systems)
- Mounting kit (Renusol VarioSol for pitched, Renusol MetaSol for trapezoidal, Esdec for flat)
- DC cabling, isolators, MC4 connectors
- AC switchgear and consumer-unit integration
- Scaffolding hire
- Roof penetration sealing
- Labour — design, installation, commissioning
- MCS certification fee
- DNO application (G98 or G99)
- QANW Insurance-Backed Guarantee
- Documentation pack
What drives quote variation
- Panel brand. Aiko premium panels run 10–15% more per watt than JA Solar. Justified where roof space matters.
- Battery brand. Tesla Powerwall is in a much higher price band than the Solis + Fogstar combination we install — we don’t fit Powerwall (see our comparison article).
- Inverter type. Solis hybrid is the default; SolarEdge optimisers add £800–£1,500 to a typical install.
- Roof complexity. Multiple roof faces, complex hip-ends, in-roof solar all add labour.
- Scaffolding cost. Standard pitched residential is ~£800–£1,500. 3-storey homes, hard-access sites, scaffold tower requirements drive this up.
- DNO works. Single-phase upgrade to three-phase, reinforcement charges on weak networks.
- Installer scale. Single-van installers price differently to fleet operators. Both can deliver quality; pricing reflects business model.

Spectrum’s pricing philosophy
Three things we do (and don’t do) on pricing:
- Single all-in price. One number for the install — no line-by-line breakdown. We don’t want customers comparing component prices — the value is in the integrated system.
- 0% VAT shown clearly. Domestic prices show 0% VAT line for transparency, not ‘+VAT’ that you have to ask about.
- No high-pressure sales. Quote is valid for 30 days, no pressure to sign at the kitchen table, no ‘today-only’ deals. RECC-member rules require this anyway, but it’s how we’d operate regardless.
What you don’t see on a quote
Things bundled into the all-in price that might not be obvious:
- QANW Insurance-Backed Guarantee. Included as standard on every Spectrum install.
- SEG registration. We file the paperwork once the system commissions.
- MCS certificate. Issued at commissioning, supplied as digital and paper copy.
- System documentation. Single-line diagram, as-built drawings, manuals.
- 30-day post-commissioning monitoring. We watch system performance for 30 days and reach out if generation isn’t tracking expected.
- Predbat tuning. For Octopus Agile customers, Predbat setup and tuning is included.
Red flags in pricing
- Quote under £6,000 for a full 4kWp + battery domestic install. Either kit is substandard, MCS certification is missing, or scope is incomplete. Realistically not possible at fair UK pricing.
- ‘Cash-only’ discount. Suggests off-books trading or VAT manipulation. Walk away.
- ‘Free’ X with the install. Cost is built into the headline price.
- Pressure to sign tonight to lock the price. Reputable installers don’t work this way. RECC rules require a 14-day cooling-off period.
- Single-line itemisation with high ‘design fee’ or ‘commission’. Padded margin. Compare the bottom-line all-in cost.
FAQs
How much do solar panels cost UK 2026?
A 5kWp solar + 16kWh battery install for a typical 4-bed UK home costs around £9,995–£11,800 in 2026, all-in including 0% VAT — the £9,995 5–6kWp + 16.1kWh Fogstar system is Spectrum’s most-installed domestic configuration. Smaller systems are cheaper, larger systems scale up at roughly £1,500–£2,000 per added kWp of solar plus £1,200–£1,500 per 16kWh of battery.
How much does a 5kW solar system cost?
A 5kWp solar system without battery costs around £8,500 installed in 2026 (2.7kWp + small battery as the floor; 4kWp E/W around £9,000). Add a 16.1kWh battery for £9,995–£11,800 total. The battery is usually worth adding — payback is 1–2 years better with battery than without.
How much does a commercial solar install cost?
UK commercial solar runs £850–£1,100 per kWp installed, ex-VAT. A 50kWp commercial install lands at £42,000–£55,000. A 100kWp install at £82,000–£110,000. Battery storage adds typically £600–£800 per kWh of capacity. Annual Investment Allowance gives 25% effective discount via tax.
Why are solar prices different between installers?
Three main reasons: kit choice (panel brand, battery brand, inverter type vary), installer business model (single-van vs fleet operator), and quote scope (what’s included — scaffolding, DNO works, IBG, monitoring setup). Always compare on like-for-like specification, not just headline price.
Are there hidden costs in solar installation?
Reputable installers quote all-in with no hidden costs. Things to check explicitly: scaffolding included, DNO application fee included, MCS certification included, IBG included, VAT shown clearly. If any of these are missing or shown as add-ons, ask why before signing.
Does solar cost more in winter or summer?
Install cost is the same year-round. Lead times may be longer in summer (peak demand) versus winter (lower demand). Some installers offer winter pricing incentives to keep crews busy in slower months — worth asking about if you’re flexible on timing.
Can I finance solar instead of paying cash?
Yes — many homeowners arrange their own finance, such as a personal loan, mortgage drawdown or a green home-improvement loan. Spectrum doesn’t provide or broker finance, so you’re free to arrange the most competitive option for your circumstances. See our solar finance article for the detail.
