Sandiacre's industry grew up on the canal: Springfield Mill was built in 1888 as a tenement lace factory, and by the 1890s the same site housed a screw works and a cycle maker. Several of those canal-side sites have since become housing, but businesses still work from the employment areas along the canal and from the shops around the junction of Derby Road, Station Road, Longmoor Lane and Town Street.

Erewash Borough Council is the planning authority, with Sandiacre Parish Council consulted on applications. The town has three conservation areas: Canal Side and Cloud Side, both designated in March 1984 with an appraisal adopted in 2014, and Sandiacre Lock, also from 1984. The church of St Giles is Grade I, and Springfield Mill, Pear Tree House and the old lock-up and pound are all Grade II. Most home solar is permitted development, but for listed buildings and for homes in the conservation areas we check the position before we draw up the layout. Homes over the river in Stapleford or Toton are handled by Broxtowe Borough Council instead.

Grid Connection

Both sides of the Erewash, Sandiacre and Stapleford alike, are on National Grid Electricity Distribution's East Midlands network, and MPANs start with 11. A normal home system is notified under G98 after installation, and larger systems wait for G99 approval before they are switched on. Some of the newer canal-side developments may be supplied by an independent network, so we look at your MPAN before applying.

The oldest part of Sandiacre clusters around St Giles on the ridge above the valley; the lace mills and workers' housing came later on the flat land by the canal.
