South Derbyshire District Council is the planning authority, with Etwall Parish Council consulted. The Etwall conservation area was designated on 10 April 1975, and its character statement was adopted in 2011. The parish has 16 listed buildings: St Helen's Church is Grade I, the Sir John Port Almshouses of 1681 and the Robert Bakewell gates in front of them are also listed, and the other 13, including the Hawk and Buckle Inn, Etwall Lodge and the well head by the churchyard, are Grade II. Most home solar is permitted development, but listed buildings need consent, so we check before we design.

Etwall is on National Grid Electricity Distribution's East Midlands network, as are Hilton, Hatton and Tutbury over the Dove, and local MPANs start with 11. We submit the G98 notification after a normal home install, or the G99 application before a larger or farm system is connected.
