Intelligent Octopus Go with Solar and an EV: How It Fits Together

Intelligent Octopus Go is an EV-first smart tariff: a deeply discounted overnight window, typically 11.30pm to 5.30am, during which the whole house pays the cheap rate, with Octopus's smart-scheduling charging the car in the cheapest half-hours and sometimes extending cheap charging beyond the window. For a home with solar, a battery and an EV, it is often the strongest overall setup: the car and the home battery both fill overnight at the cheap rate, solar covers the day, and an export tariff pays for the surplus. The catch: you need a compatible car or charger, and the sums against Flux depend on how much your car actually drives.

Intelligent Octopus Go with Solar and an EV: How It Fits Together

The short answer

How Intelligent Go actually works

The tariff has two moving parts. First, a guaranteed overnight window, typically 11.30pm to 5.30am, when every kilowatt-hour the house imports is billed at a rate roughly a quarter to a third of the standard price. Second, the intelligence: you tell the Octopus app when the car must be ready and how full, and Octopus schedules the charging itself, picking the cheapest half-hours and, where wholesale prices allow, charging outside the window while still billing those hours at the cheap rate. You plug in; the software does the thinking.

We deliberately avoid printing pence figures, rates move with the market and vary by region, but the structure above is the stable part, and it has one property the other solar tariffs lack: that whole-house cheap window is generous enough to matter, which is where the battery comes in.

Where solar fits in

Intelligent Go is an import tariff; your solar's export earnings come from pairing it with an export tariff on the same account, and the pairing is standard practice. The daily rhythm for a solar household:

  • Overnight windowThe car charges on the cheap rate, scheduled automatically like the plan pictured. So does anything else you can shift: dishwasher, immersion, and critically the home battery.
  • DaytimeSolar runs the house, tops the battery back up, and exports the surplus for payment.
  • EveningThe battery covers the expensive hours until the window opens again.

The result is a house that almost never buys electricity at the standard rate: solar by day, battery in the evening, cheap window overnight.

The home battery trick

Here is the part EV owners often miss: because the whole house pays the cheap rate during the window, your home battery can charge overnight alongside the car, at car-charging prices. A 16.1kWh battery like ours filled entirely in the window costs a fraction of what the same energy would cost at daytime rates, and in winter, when solar contributes little, that overnight fill is what carries the house through the day, the exact mechanism our time-shifting guide is built around. An EV household on Intelligent Go with no home battery is leaving the second half of the tariff's value on the table; sizing that battery is what our surveys are for.

Intelligent Go vs Flux

The two Octopus tariffs solar-and-battery homes weigh up split on one question: how big is the car in your energy life?

HouseholdLikelier winner
EV doing real miles weeklyIntelligent Go: the car's cheap-rate volume dominates the sums
Solar + battery, no EVFlux: built for the battery's buy-low-sell-high day
EV that barely leaves the driveGenuinely close; run both against your smart meter data

Flux pays more for peak-time exports; Intelligent Go buys the car's (and battery's) energy cheaper. High-mileage households tilt one way, high-export households the other, and the answer deserves revisiting annually as rates move.

Eligibility and setup

  • A compatible EV or chargerOctopus needs control of the charging schedule, through a supported car's own connectivity or a supported smart charger. The compatibility list grows continually; check yours on Octopus's site before switching.
  • A working smart meterHalf-hourly readings are the tariff's raw material, covered in our smart meter guide.
  • An export tariff for the solarPaired on the same account; our export comparison shows the going rates.
  • A battery configured for the windowModern systems schedule this automatically once set up. The SolisCloud app has a time of use mode where you set the windows for your tariff, and we show you how at handover.

Frequently asked questions

Does Intelligent Octopus Go work with solar panels?

Yes, well. Intelligent Go handles your imports, the cheap overnight window plus smart car charging, while a paired export tariff pays for your solar surplus. Solar covers the day, the battery covers the evening, and the window covers the night: the house rarely touches the standard rate.

Can my home battery charge during the cheap window?

Yes, and it should: the discounted rate applies to the whole house during the window, not just the car. Charging the home battery overnight at car-charging prices is what carries a solar home through winter days, and modern battery systems schedule it automatically once configured.

What do I need to be eligible for Intelligent Octopus Go?

A working smart meter and a compatible EV or smart charger that Octopus can control to schedule charging. The supported list covers most major car makes and chargers and grows over time; check your specific model on Octopus's site before switching.

Is Intelligent Octopus Go better than Flux for solar homes?

It depends on the car. Households whose EV does real weekly mileage usually come out ahead on Intelligent Go, because the cheap-rate charging volume dominates. Battery-centric homes without an EV usually do better on Flux, which rewards peak-time exports. Run both against your own smart meter data.

What are the Intelligent Octopus Go rates?

They move with the market and vary by region, which is why we print the structure rather than figures that would date: an overnight window, typically 11.30pm to 5.30am, at roughly a quarter to a third of the standard rate, whole-house, with smart-scheduled car charging sometimes extending beyond it. Current rates are on Octopus's site.
