Solar Panel Installation Cost in Doncaster: Real Prices
Last updated: 14 October 2026. Spectrum Energy Systems
A Doncaster home with 4 to 6kWp of panels and a battery normally costs £9,000 to £9,995 fully fitted. Scaffolding, labour and the 0% VAT rate (to 31 March 2027) are already counted. Doncaster is up the M18 from our Nottingham base and gets the same prices. The grid is where it differs: the city is on Northern Powergrid's network, not the East Midlands operator's, and we make that application for you.

Doncaster roofs: what actually moves a quote
- Semi-detached housesAt the 2021 Census, 45.5% of households in the Doncaster borough lived in a semi. On most of them the choice is between the 4kWp split, if the roof faces east and west, and the 5 to 6kWp system on a south-facing slope.
- Terraces21.1% of households were in terraced houses, from the streets around Hexthorpe and Balby to the pit villages. A terrace roof usually has room for the 2.7kWp system.
- Detached homes24.1% of households lived in a detached house, more than in Barnsley, Rotherham or Sheffield. Bigger roofs in places like Bawtry, Tickhill and Sprotbrough suit the 7kWp system, like the array pictured.
- New estates on old pit landAfter Rossington Colliery closed in 2007, up to 1,200 homes were approved there in 2012, and the Unity scheme beside the former Hatfield Colliery at M18 junction 5 plans more than 3,000. Newer roofs are often simpler to fit but can have smaller faces, so we count panels before we price.

Planning and the grid in Doncaster
City of Doncaster Council is the planning authority. Solar on a house is normally permitted development. The council's conservation areas include the old centres of Bawtry, Tickhill and Thorne, Manor Road in Hatfield, the Bessacarr and South Bessacarr areas, Sprotbrough, Warmsworth, Mexborough and Woodlands, the model village built for the miners of Brodsworth Colliery. We check any address in one of these, and any listed building, before designing.
Doncaster has three Article 4 directions in force: one for houses in multiple occupation from 2019, and two from 2024, one for the former Balby Board School and one for the Doncaster Sheffield Airport site. None of them covers solar panels on a family home.
Northern Powergrid runs the network across the city. A smaller system is notified to them under G98 after it is connected, and a larger one needs G99 approval first. The borough's edges run into Nottinghamshire and North Lincolnshire, so for those addresses we confirm the operator from the MPAN on your bill.
Payback: a worked local example
The workings for the £9,995 system. Assume 5.7kWp of panels and a 16.1kWh battery, producing 900 to 1,050 kWh per kWp each year, the regional range on the MCS-standard method. Each unit you use at home saves 26.32p per kWh, the Ofgem price cap unit rate for October to December 2026, and the units you export are paid for. Savings and export together recover the cost in circa 8 years. On a two-rate tariff the battery can charge overnight at the cheap rate, which keeps it useful through winter; the time-shifting guide has the detail. These numbers are illustrative. Choosing an installer locally
Before you sign with anyone in Doncaster, check four things. The MCS certificate should be in the installer's own name, and you can confirm it on the MCS register. The price should include the scaffold and the electrical work in writing. The workmanship guarantee should be written down, with insurance behind it in case the firm stops trading. And the installing should be done by the firm's own employed crews. Ours is MCS NIC200223, one all-in price, a 5-year workmanship guarantee backed by QANW, and our own crews on the roof. We also make the Northern Powergrid application on every job. Our installer-choice guide lists the other checks.

How much do solar panels cost in Doncaster?
Home systems with a battery cost £8,500 to £11,800 all-in. The standard setup, 5 to 6kWp and a 16.1kWh battery, is £9,995. Every figure includes scaffolding, electrical work and 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Panels without a battery are priced once we have surveyed.
Is Doncaster on Northern Powergrid or National Grid for solar?
Northern Powergrid. The East Midlands, where we are based, is National Grid Electricity Distribution's area, but the process is the same: G98 notification after connection for a standard system, G99 approval before fitting for a larger one. We make the application either way.
Do you cover Bawtry, Tickhill, Armthorpe and the other villages?
Yes. Bawtry, Tickhill, Sprotbrough, Armthorpe, Bentley, Rossington, Conisbrough, Hatfield and Thorne are all covered, served by our own crews at the same prices and with the same 5-year workmanship guarantee, backed by QANW.
Are solar panels worth it in Doncaster?
For most homes, yes. A kWp here makes 900 to 1,050 kWh a year, the standard system pays back in circa 8 years, and the panels carry 25 to 30 year warranties. Our worth-it guide sets out the whole case.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Doncaster?
Normally no, because home solar is permitted development. Listed buildings and the conservation areas, such as the historic centres of Bawtry and Tickhill, are checked with City of Doncaster Council first. We do that as part of the survey.
