What solar tiles actually are
Solar tiles, sometimes called solar slates or solar shingles, are small photovoltaic units that replace the roof covering itself: each tile is both weatherproofing and generator. The idea has been around for years, boosted by glossy solar roof concepts from big-name brands, most of which have had limited or no real availability in the UK. What exists here in practice is a handful of specialist tile and slate products, installed by a small pool of roofing-trained installers.
Panels need no introduction, but the distinction that matters is that a panel system is equipment mounted over or into a roof, while a tile system is the roof. That difference drives everything: cost, complexity, repair, and who is qualified to touch it.

Why tiles cost so much more
Nothing sinister, just physics and labour. Splitting a system into dozens of small generating units means far more connections, more edge material per watt, and cells that run hotter with less ventilation than a mounted panel. Then the labour: fitting a solar tile roof is roofing and electrical work combined, done tile by tile.
The result is paying considerably more per kW for a system that generates less per square metre of the same roof. The in-roof middle ground nobody offers you
Here is the option that solves most tile conversations in one photo: in-roof panels. The panels sit within the roofline on trays, replacing the tiles beneath them, finishing flush like a rooflight rather than proud like a bolt-on. You get most of the integrated look tiles are sold on, at panel prices with panel outputs and panel warranties.

An honest verdict includes the exceptions. They also suit the small set of owners for whom the pure aesthetic is worth a serious premium and who go in understanding the trade. If that is you, choose an established product with a UK track record, ask hard questions about spares and the installer's roofing credentials, and get the output modelling in writing.
