Solar Panel Installation Cost in Newark: Real Prices
Last updated: 13 October 2026. Spectrum Energy Systems
In Newark-on-Trent a 4 to 6kWp system with a battery typically costs £9,000 to £9,995 all-in, including scaffolding, labour and 0% VAT until 31st March 2027, the same as anywhere else in Nottinghamshire. Our Bulwell unit is about 17 miles away. Newark's conservation area, first designated in 1968, covers the castle and market place, and homes inside it need a planning check first. Most of NG24 does not.

Newark roofs: what the quote depends on
- The historic coreStreets around the castle, market place and Millgate fall in the conservation area, and some frontages are listed, so planning is checked before anything is promised. Flush in-roof arrays like the one pictured are the sympathetic option, and our conservation guide covers the rules.
- TerracesTerraced homes make up 27% of households in Newark's four town wards (Census 2021). Their roofs are smaller and sometimes steeper, which calls for careful fitting rather than causing a problem.
- SemisAt 34% of households, semis are the largest group in those wards. Most have a plain pitched roof that is quick to design.
- Flats13% of households there live in purpose-built flats, where solar is a decision for whoever owns the roof.
- Fernwood and the newer estatesModern trussed roofs go up quickly, but small roof faces can limit panel numbers.
- The Trent villagesFarndon, Winthorpe, Coddington and Balderton are about 2 miles out, and Collingham about 5. Their bigger detached roofs are where the 7kWp system fits.

Planning and the grid for a Newark install
Newark and Sherwood District Council is the planning authority, with 47 conservation areas across the district. Newark's own was first designated in 1968. Changes approved in November 2022 added Crown Street, Lime Grove, Wellington Road and parts of Friary Road and Appletongate, so a home outside the old boundary may now sit inside it.
A number of 18th and 19th century properties on Balderton Gate, King Street, Parliament Street and Victoria Street also have Article 4 directions that remove some permitted development rights. Work covered by an Article 4 direction needs a planning application. It does not ban solar. We check the position for your address before the design.
The network is run by National Grid Electricity Distribution, whose East Midlands data lists a Newark Junction primary substation. We send the G98 notification for a standard home system after connection, or get G99 approval first for a larger one.
Home designs we have drawn near Newark, at Collingham and Sutton on Trent, have 8 and 9 panels, and we have drawn a 56-panel design at Southwell.
Payback, step by step
The circa 8 year payback on the £9,995 system comes from these assumptions. Electricity is priced at 26.32p per kWh, the Ofgem cap rate for October to December 2026. Generation is 900 to 1,050kWh per kWp a year across the region, by the MCS-standard method. A 5.7kWp system with a 16.1kWh battery, earning from both lower bills and export, then repays its cost in circa 8 years. With a two-rate tariff the battery also charges on cheap overnight power in winter, as our time-shifting guide explains. The figure illustrates the maths and is not guaranteed; try the savings calculator with your own bills.
Finding a Newark installer
For any Newark quote, look up the company's MCS certification in its own name on the official register, and make sure scaffolding and electrical work are inside the price rather than added later, and check the firm's own employed crews are doing the installing. We pass all three across Nottinghamshire, and we deal with National Grid Electricity Distribution for the grid paperwork on every job. The installer-choice guide lists everything else worth asking, whoever you choose.
Start your Newark quote

How much do solar panels cost in Newark?
Expect £8,500 to £11,800 all-in for a typical home system with a battery. Our standard package, 5 to 6kWp with a 16.1kWh battery, costs £9,995. The prices include scaffolding, electrical work and 0% VAT until 31st March 2027, and panels-only jobs are priced at the survey.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Newark?
For most NG24 homes, no, because home solar is normally permitted development. The exceptions are the conservation area around the castle, market place and Millgate, the Article 4 properties on streets such as King Street and Parliament Street, and listed buildings. We check them at the survey, before promising anything.
Do you cover Balderton, Fernwood and the Trent villages?
Yes. Balderton, Fernwood, Farndon, Winthorpe, Coddington and Collingham are all covered, along with Southwell and the rest of the district, served by our own crews at the same prices and with the same 5-year workmanship guarantee backed by QANW.
Are solar panels worth it in Newark?
Across Nottinghamshire each kWp of panels makes 900 to 1,050kWh a year. For our standard system that means circa 8 years to pay back, then years of cheap power under 25 to 30 year panel warranties. The worth-it guide has the full argument.
Which electricity network covers Newark for solar approvals?
National Grid Electricity Distribution covers Newark and the rest of the East Midlands. A standard home system is notified under G98 once connected, while a larger one needs G99 approval beforehand. The installer should handle this, and we do on every job.
