Derby Housing Stock and What It Means for Cost
The classic Derby solar roof
The 1930s semis and detached homes in Allestree, Mickleover and Littleover are some of the easiest solar roofs we work on. Simple pitched roofs, sensible access for scaffolding, and enough space for a 5 to 6kWp array like the all-black system pictured. On these roofs the £9,995 system is usually the natural fit.
Victorian terraces around Normanton and Rose Hill are a different job. The roofs are steeper, access is often from a rear alley, and scaffolding takes longer to put up. The panels cost the same; the labour and scaffold side reflects the harder access.
Newer estates around Boulton Moor and Mackworth bring a different question: covenants. Plenty of new-build deeds contain wording that looks restrictive on external alterations. In our experience most of them do not actually block a properly installed solar array, but it is worth checking your deeds or asking your developer before you commit. We flag it during the survey if we think it applies.
One more Derby-specific point: if you are out towards the Peak District fringe, some villages sit in conservation areas where roof-mounted panels need more care over positioning, or an in-roof system to keep the planners happy. Payback on a Derby Roof
Derby gets the same sunlight as the rest of the East Midlands, which under the MCS-standard generation methodology works out at roughly 900 to 1,050 kWh a year for each kWp on the roof. Our £9,995 system at 5.7kWp therefore produces somewhere around 5,400 kWh annually. Every unit you use yourself is a unit you did not buy at the Ofgem price cap rate of 26.11p per kWh (the July to September 2026 cap), and the 16.1kWh battery exists so the evening load runs off stored solar rather than the grid. The surplus goes out under a Smart Export Guarantee or bundled export tariff and earns a little on top.
Run those numbers for a typical household and the first year is worth somewhere in the region of £1,200 to £1,300 in savings and export income, giving a payback of circa 8 years on the £9,995 system. Treat that as illustrative rather than a promise. A house that sits empty all day on a single-rate tariff will do worse, and a heavy user on a two-rate tariff will do better. What Moves a Derby Quote Up or Down
Access and scaffolding
A 1930s semi with a drive in Mickleover is the cheapest to scaffold. Terraces with rear alley access around Normanton and Rose Hill, and three-storey town houses near the city centre, need more scaffold and more time on site.
Roof type and finish
An in-roof system, where the panels sit flush within the roofline, costs more than a standard on-roof array but suits period properties and conservation-sensitive streets on the Peak District fringe. Slate roofs take longer to work on safely and that shows in the labour cost.
Battery size
Moving from a 10kWh to a 16.1kWh battery adds several hundred pounds, and for most households it is the better value choice because it captures more of your summer surplus for evening use and lets you shift cheap overnight electricity on a two-rate tariff.
Electrical work
Older Derby homes sometimes need consumer unit upgrades or a meter swap. We price this in the quote after the survey rather than springing it on you during the install.
Grid connection
The electricity network operator for Derby is National Grid Electricity Distribution, which runs the East Midlands licence area. Systems up to 16 amps per phase (3.68kW of inverter capacity) only need a notification after installation under G98. Larger systems, which is most installs with a battery, need G99 approval first. We handle the application either way and it is included in the price.
Every Quote Starts With a Design of Your Actual Roof
A postcode and an aerial photo cannot tell you what your roof will actually take, so we do not price from them. After the free survey we build a 3D model of your roof and lay the panels out on it, face by face, before any number reaches you. You see how many panels fit, where they go and what each layout generates through the year.
The quote comes off the back of that design, normally within 2 to 4 days depending on workload, and it names the exact kit: the panels, the Solis inverter (like the one pictured on one of our installs) and the battery capacity. Where a bigger layout does not earn its extra cost for your usage, the quote tells you that too.
How to Compare Derby Solar Quotes Properly
If you have already collected two or three Derby quotes, you will have noticed they are hard to line up against each other. One is panels only, one has a small battery, one buries scaffolding in the small print. Before you pick on price, make the quotes comparable:
- Get scaffolding in writing. On a straightforward semi it is a modest cost. On a steep Victorian terrace with rear access only, it can run to four figures, and some quotes leave it out entirely.
- Compare battery capacity, not battery presence. "Includes battery" covers everything from 5kWh to 16.1kWh. Work out the price per usable kWh before deciding which quote is actually cheaper.
- Find out whose ladder is on your drive. Plenty of firms selling solar in Derby sell the install on to whoever is available. Ask directly whether the crews are employed by the company on the paperwork.
- Verify the MCS number. No MCS certificate means no export payment registration. The certificate is checkable on the MCS website in about a minute.
- Separate the warranties. Manufacturers cover the panels, inverter and battery. The workmanship guarantee sits with the installer, and it dies with the installer if they fold, unless it is insurance backed like ours.
