Solar Panel Installation Cost in Leicester 2026: Real Local Prices

Last updated: 29 September 2026. Spectrum Energy Systems.

The short answer

Solar panels with a battery typically cost £8,500 to £11,800 all-in on a Leicester home in 2026 from our solar panel installers in Leicester, with scaffolding, labour and 0% VAT included. Our standard system, 5 to 6kWp of panels with a 16.1kWh battery, is £9,995. The figures come from our own East Midlands jobs, so they are local prices rather than a national average.

What Solar Panels Cost in Leicester in 2026

We cover Leicester and the rest of Leicestershire from our HQ in Bulwell, Nottingham. The prices below are taken from our own recent quotes and finished jobs in the East Midlands. Each one is a single all-in figure. Nothing is added for VAT on a home installation, because the Government's 0% rate on domestic solar and battery storage runs until 31 March 2027 (gov.uk).

SystemIndicative all-in cost (0% VAT)Suits
2.7kWp solar + 10kWh battery£8,500Victorian terraces in areas like Clarendon Park and Highfields
4kWp solar + 10kWh battery (east west split)£9,000Compact semis, common across Braunstone and Aylestone
5 to 6kWp solar + 16.1kWh battery£9,9951930s semis in Evington and Knighton. Our standard system
7kWp solar + 16.1kWh battery£11,800Larger 4 to 5 bed homes in Oadby, Stoneygate and similar
10kWp solar + 16 to 32kWh battery£14,000 to £17,000Large detached plots out towards Birstall, EV charging, high usage

The figures are illustrative, drawn from our own 2026 jobs. What you pay depends on the size of your roof, the access and the kit you choose, so we price from a design of your actual roof and never from a postcode calculator. For national context, our UK solar installation cost guide covers pricing beyond Leicester, and our Leicestershire solar page covers the wider county.

What the All-In Price Includes

Cheap headline prices usually leave things out, and scaffolding is the classic one. When we quote a Leicester install, the single figure covers everything from design to certification:

Included in every Spectrum quote

  • Tier 1 solar panels, typically 500W, with 25 to 30 year performance warranties
  • Solis hybrid inverter
  • Battery storage (Fogstar on our standard domestic systems)
  • Mounting kit matched to your roof type, including in-roof trays where wanted
  • Scaffolding hire, which many installers price separately
  • All DC and AC electrical work, isolators and consumer unit integration
  • The grid notification or application to National Grid Electricity Distribution, the DNO for Leicester
  • MCS certification (our number is NIC200223) and the full handover pack
  • QANW Insurance-Backed Guarantee and our 5-year workmanship guarantee

We are NICEIC Approved (Reg. 3182878) and RECC members (00080159), and our installation crews are in-house rather than subcontracted. That matters for price consistency: you are not paying a sales company's margin on top of an installer's margin.

Leicester Housing Stock and What It Means for Your Price

Leicester's roofs are not all the same job. The Victorian terraces around Clarendon Park and Highfields often need scaffolding from a rear alley or shared access, which takes more planning and more scaffold. The 1930s semis in Evington, Knighton and Western Park are classic solar roofs: a decent pitch, a clear south or east west aspect, and space for 8 to 12 panels without fighting dormers and chimneys. Out towards Oadby and Birstall, the bigger detached plots take the larger 7 to 10kWp arrays that make EV charging and heat pump running costs interesting.

Period homes suit in-roof systems

On period properties like this one, an in-roof system sits flush within the roofline instead of on top of it. It costs a little more than a standard on-roof array but looks right on older brick and slate streets, and it is often the answer where a conservation officer has opinions.

We install across Leicestershire from our Nottingham base. This 7.2kW residential installation in Sherwood shows the kind of domestic work we do: all-black panels, battery storage, and a bill cut of 96%.

Leicester Planning, Conservation Areas and the Grid

Leicester City Council is a unitary authority and decides planning for the whole city, which has no parish councils. The city had 368,600 residents at the 2021 Census. Its own postcode districts run from LE1 in the centre to LE5 in the east, but several of them cross the boundary into Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough or Oadby and Wigston, so the council that handles your planning depends on the exact address.

Most home solar is permitted development and needs no application. The city has over 400 listed buildings and 25 conservation areas, among them New Walk, Stoneygate, Knighton, Evington Village, Old Humberstone, Aylestone village, South Highfields, the West End and Spinney Hill Park. In a conservation area the council says you must apply for planning permission if a panel faces the street and is visible. In Stoneygate, the West End and Spinney Hill Park, Article 4 directions also cover alterations to roofs. An Article 4 direction means you need permission first; it does not stop you having panels. We check the address before we design.

Roofs change from one district to the next. Stoneygate is known for Victorian and Edwardian red brick and slate, the West End for red-brick terraces with slate roofs, and Spinney Hills for the planned late-Victorian terraces around Spinney Hill Park. Beaumont Leys was largely built from the 1970s. The newest homes are at Ashton Green, where over 1,400 of up to 3,000 planned homes were built or in development by March 2026, and at New Lubbesthorpe, just outside the city in Blaby district.

National Grid Electricity Distribution runs Leicester's network as part of its East Midlands area. Some new-build estates are connected through an independent network operator instead, so we read the MPAN on your bill before we apply.

Payback on a Leicester Roof, Worked Through

Using the MCS-standard generation method, a well sited system in the East Midlands produces 900 to 1,050 kWh a year for each kWp. At 5.7kWp, our £9,995 system comes out at roughly 5,400 kWh a year. The 16.1kWh battery holds what the house does not use during the day, so a high-usage household uses the large majority of that output itself. Every unit used that way is one you do not buy at the Ofgem price cap unit rate, currently 26.32p per kWh (October to December 2026 cap). The rest goes to the grid and is paid for under a Smart Export Guarantee or a bundled export tariff.

Put together, first-year saving plus export income comes to around £1,200 to £1,300 for a household that uses most of that output itself. That is a payback of circa 8 years. Treat that as an illustration. Your own figure depends on when you use power, which tariff you are on and what your roof can hold, and if your usage is very low the payback stretches and the quote will say so plainly. To try your own figures, use our solar savings calculator.

What Moves a Leicester Quote Up or Down

Access and scaffolding

A semi with a driveway in Evington is the cheapest to scaffold. A terrace in Clarendon Park with rear alley access, or a three-storey town house near the city centre, needs more scaffold and more time on site, and that shows in the price.

Roof type and finish

Slate roofs, common on Leicester's older streets, take longer to work on safely than concrete tile. In-roof systems cost more than on-roof. Neither is a problem, but both move the labour line.

Battery size

Going up from 10kWh to 16.1kWh adds several hundred pounds. For most households the bigger battery is the better buy, as it holds more of the summer surplus for the evening and takes on more cheap overnight power on a two-rate tariff.

Electrical work

Some older houses in the city need a new consumer unit or a meter swap. If yours does, the site survey picks it up before install day, so it never turns up halfway through the job.

Grid connection

Systems up to 16 amps per phase only need a notification to National Grid Electricity Distribution, the DNO covering Leicester under its East Midlands licence area, after installation under G98. Bigger systems, and that means most installs with a battery, need G99 approval before we start. Either way we make the application, and it is part of the price.

Every Quote Starts With a Design of Your Actual Roof

No Leicester quote of ours is priced from a postcode. We model your actual roof in 3D and lay the panels out on it, face by face. You see how many panels fit on each pitch and what each option generates over the year, and the quote is priced from that design, normally within 2 to 4 days depending on workload. If the bigger option does not stack up for your usage, we say so in the quote rather than upselling it.

Commercial Solar in Leicester

Solar panel installation cost Leicester guide, commercial rooftop solar install in progress with in-house crew (Spectrum Energy Systems UK installation)

Leicester's industrial estates suit rooftop solar well. The units have big shallow-pitch roofs, and the machinery and refrigeration inside them burn electricity all day, which is exactly when the panels generate. Most already have a three-phase supply too. A commercial system prices differently from a domestic one, with VAT added and payback typically driven by daytime self-consumption. Our commercial solar cost guide covers the numbers in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do solar panels cost in Leicester in 2026?

For solar with battery storage, Leicester homes typically pay £8,500 to £11,800 all-in in 2026, with 0% VAT applied. A 3 to 4 bed house with a 5 to 6kWp array and a 16.1kWh battery comes to £9,995 with Spectrum Energy Systems.

Are there solar grants in Leicester?

There is no general grant for homeowners buying solar in Leicester. The main support is the 0% VAT rate on domestic solar and battery storage, which runs until 31 March 2027, plus export payments through the Smart Export Guarantee. Means-tested government schemes only reach qualifying low-income households.

Do you cover Leicester?

Yes. We cover the whole city and the rest of Leicestershire from our base in Bulwell, Nottingham, at the same prices and with the same 5-year workmanship guarantee. Our own in-house crews do the survey, the install and the aftercare, not subcontractors. Spectrum Energy Systems has worked across the East Midlands since 2011.

Is it cheaper to install solar without a battery?

Yes, a panels-only system costs a few thousand pounds less up front. But without storage you export most of your generation for a fraction of what you pay to import electricity, so the payback usually works out worse. Nearly all our domestic installs now include a battery for that reason.

Who is the DNO for Leicester, and do I need their permission?

National Grid Electricity Distribution runs the network in Leicester, as part of its East Midlands licence area. A small system is notified after installation under G98, while most battery systems need G99 approval beforehand. We make the notification or application on every install as part of the job.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Leicester?

Usually not, because roof-mounted solar is permitted development on most Leicester homes. Listed buildings are different, and so are the city's 25 conservation areas: there the council says you must apply if a panel faces the street and is visible, and Article 4 directions in Stoneygate, the West End and Spinney Hill Park cover alterations to roofs. Any application goes to Leicester City Council, and we check your address during the site survey.

What payback should I expect on a Leicester solar install?

Circa 8 years for a high-usage Leicester home that uses most of its generation on our £9,995 system, worked out from East Midlands generation figures, current Ofgem price cap rates and a published export tariff. A two-rate tariff can shorten that, and a home that uses very little electricity will take longer.
