Project Overview

GivEnergy 10kW hybrid inverter and 9.5kWh HV battery stack installation with AC and DC isolators at Woodborough property

When Michelle purchased her property in Woodborough, Nottingham, she knew the roof needed replacing. Rather than simply retiling, she saw an opportunity to future-proof her home with an integrated solar solution that would reduce energy bills and provide battery backup for increased energy independence.

The result is a stunning 8.1kW in-roof solar installation in Woodborough featuring 18 DMEGC 450W panels seamlessly integrated into the roof structure using the GSE mounting system. Paired with a 9.5kWh GivEnergy battery stack and 7kW EV charger, this comprehensive system now covers 80% of the household's energy needs whilst reducing monthly electricity bills from £150 to just £5.

As an MCS certified and NICEIC approved installer with over 15 years of experience in domestic solar installations, we were able to deliver the sleek, premium finish Michelle wanted whilst solving the technical challenges of integrating panels across both the main house and garage roofs.

This Project Is Ideal If You Are:

Planning a roof replacement and want integrated solar

Looking for a sleek, premium aesthetic without visible mounting rails

Wanting battery backup for energy independence

Considering EV charging powered by solar

The Challenge

GSE in-roof solar mounting tray installation in progress with scaffolding on main house roof in Woodborough, Nottingham

This in-roof solar installation in Woodborough presented several unique technical challenges that required careful planning and skilled execution. The project involved integrating solar panels into two separate roof areas with different characteristics, all whilst maintaining the property's attractive appearance.

The main house roof was being completely replaced, which provided the perfect opportunity for a clean in-roof installation using the GSE mounting system. However, the garage roof featured existing Victorian plain tiles that needed to be carefully removed, the mounting system installed, and the original tiles reinstated around the panel array—a task requiring precision and expertise.

Perhaps the most complex challenge was the cable routing. The main house roof sits higher than the garage, and Michelle was clear she didn't want any visible conduit running down the gable end or into the garage. Our team had to devise a hidden cable route that connected both arrays to the central inverter and battery system without any exposed trunking.

With monthly electricity bills of £150 and rising energy costs a concern, Michelle needed a solution that would deliver substantial long-term savings whilst looking as though it was designed into the property from the start. Our experience with expert domestic solar installations proved essential in developing a solution that met all these requirements.

Our Solution

GSE in-roof mounting system trays and panel apertures during installation showing roof integration detail

We designed a comprehensive solar and battery solution that maximises energy generation whilst delivering the sleek aesthetic Michelle wanted. The GSE in-roof mounting system was the perfect choice, allowing the DMEGC 450W panels to sit flush with the roof tiles for a clean, integrated appearance.

The 8.1kW array comprises 18 high-efficiency DMEGC 450W all-black panels, split across the main house and garage roofs. This split-array configuration captures sunlight throughout the day from both roof orientations, providing consistent energy generation from morning through to evening.

To maximise self-consumption and provide backup power capability, we installed a 9.5kWh GivEnergy HV battery stack. This stores excess daytime generation for use during evenings and cloudy periods, dramatically reducing grid dependence. The GivEnergy 10kW hybrid inverter manages the entire system, intelligently routing power between panels, battery, home, and grid.

Completing the installation is a 7kW GivEnergy EV charger, allowing Michelle to charge her electric vehicle using free solar electricity whenever possible.

Installation Process

18x DMEGC 450W solar panels in GSE in-roof mounting system nearing completion with scaffolding at Woodborough property

The installation was completed in five days, coordinating carefully with the roofing contractors to ensure seamless integration. Our team worked methodically across both roof areas, installing the GSE mounting trays before the new tiles were laid on the main house, and delicately working around the Victorian plain tiles on the garage roof.

The GSE in-roof system creates a weathertight seal between panels and tiles, replacing traditional roof covering in the panel area whilst maintaining full protection against the elements. Each mounting tray was precisely positioned to achieve the flush, integrated finish that was central to Michelle's vision.

Particular care was taken with the cable routing to achieve the hidden installation Michelle requested. Our electricians planned a concealed route that connects the garage array to the main system without any visible conduit on the gable end—a detail that required additional time but delivers a truly seamless appearance.

The GivEnergy 10kW hybrid inverter, 9.5kWh battery stack, and all associated electrical equipment were installed internally, with the 7kW EV charger positioned for convenient vehicle access. All work was completed to MCS and NICEIC standards, with comprehensive documentation and system handover training provided.

Common Questions Before Going Solar

"Is in-roof solar more expensive than on-roof?"

In-roof systems do carry a premium, but when coordinated with a roof replacement the additional cost is often offset by savings on tiles you'd otherwise purchase. The aesthetic benefit and integrated weatherproofing make it worthwhile for many homeowners.

"Can you really achieve hidden cable routes?"

Yes, with careful planning. Our electricians survey cable routes during the design phase and can often run cables through roof voids, behind cladding, or through internal walls to avoid any visible conduit.

"What about working with existing Victorian tiles?"

We have extensive experience with period properties. Our installers carefully remove and store existing tiles, install the mounting system, and reinstate the originals around the panel array—preserving character whilst adding modern technology.

"Do I need battery storage?"

Battery storage maximises your savings by using your solar power in the evening. Without it, you'd export cheap and buy back expensive. The 9.5kWh battery here enables 80% self-consumption and backup power capability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an in-roof solar panel system?

An in-roof solar system integrates panels directly into the roof structure, replacing conventional roof tiles in the panel area. This creates a sleek, flush finish that's more aesthetically pleasing than traditional on-roof mounted panels. The GSE mounting system used in this installation provides a weathertight seal whilst allowing for easy future maintenance access. In-roof systems are particularly popular with homeowners who want a premium appearance or are already replacing their roof.

Can solar panels be installed during a roof replacement?

Yes, installing solar panels during a roof replacement is ideal timing. It allows for seamless integration of in-roof systems, reduces overall installation costs by combining labour, and ensures the mounting system is installed on a brand new roof structure. We can coordinate with your roofing contractor or recommend trusted local roofers we regularly work with. This Woodborough installation was timed perfectly to coincide with Michelle's new roof.

How much can I save with solar panels and battery storage?

Savings depend on your energy usage, system size, and how much solar energy you use directly rather than exporting. This Woodborough homeowner reduced their monthly electricity bills from £150 to just £5—a 97% reduction saving £1,740 annually. The 9.5kWh battery storage maximises self-consumption by storing excess daytime generation for evening use. We provide personalised savings projections based on your actual bills during our free survey.

What's the payback period for a home solar system?

Residential solar payback periods typically range from 6-10 years depending on system size, energy usage patterns, and electricity costs. This 8.1kW system with battery storage has an estimated payback period of 7 years. After payback, the system continues generating free electricity for 25+ years, with panels typically retaining 80%+ efficiency even after 25 years of operation.

Can you install solar panels on a garage as well as the main house?

Yes, we regularly install split arrays across multiple roof areas including garages, outbuildings, and extensions. This allows for maximum generation capacity by utilising all available roof space. The Woodborough installation features panels on both the main house and garage roofs, with carefully hidden cabling connecting the two arrays to the central inverter and battery system. Split arrays can also capture sunlight from multiple orientations throughout the day.
